Since January 2005 it is mandatory for everyone to carry valid proof of identity with them at all times. Acceptable identification is your residence permit (verblijfsvergunning), passport, Dutch or European ID card, or a driver’s licence.

If you get caught without one these you can face a fine of €50 or, if you’re under 14 years old, €25.
