Traffic Accidents

According to the Dutch police, speeding, running red lights and driving while under the influence of alcohol cause most road accidents. Every year in Holland over 200 deaths are caused by driving under the influence and over 3000 people are permanently injured. In Amsterdam busy intersections are often the sites of accidents so be calm and vigilant when crossing them. If you are involved in an accident that is more serious then a fender bender you must remain on the scene until the police arrive. If someone is hurt you must call emergency services. You should have your licence, car registration, and insurance papers on hand for emergencies. The Netherlands has a reputation for impatient drivers but not for road rage, though there have been isolated cases. If you feel you are involved in a situation that is raging out of control you should contact the police immediately.
