Bakeries

Bakeries are dotted throughout Barcelona and nearly every barrio has at a few top quality places for pastries, sweets, cakes and bread. Residents learn to make use of these places for their daily loaf, as store bought bread isn’t of great quality. As well as the usual delights, you'll find local favorites such as bisbalenc, a barrel shaped puff pastry filled with sugared zucchini and sprinkled with pine nuts or assorted dried local fruits. Sometimes you get both, which is known as grana de capella. Flaona, a popular snack of pastry stuffed with cheese or whipped cream will line the shelves of most bakeries, along with homemade sandwiches, excellent coffee and often a selection of local wines. The sweet delights and home made cakes on offer in Barcelona's bakeries are epic in scope and size, but the decor and (often original) 50s design makes them even more of a treat.
