Berlin’s fascination with basketball is support for the notion that spectator sports in the city and Germany as a whole are Amero-centric. The Basketball Bundesliga (BBL), with 18 city clubs including Alba Berlin (see below), is massively popular. There is a magazine, Fünf, devoted to the sport, and an online community called ‘Nice Dunk’ (www.schoenen-dunk.de), with more than 11,000 registered members. The season runs from September to May. The national team won the silver medal at Basketball’s European Championships (Eurobasket) in 2005 and the bronze medal at the 2002 World Championships.
