Ice Hockey
Legend has it that Berlin was the birthplace of ice hockey in Germany, with the first match played between amateurs on the frozen Halensee. The rivalry between Berlin Capitals and EHC Eisbären Berlin used to fuel ice hockey mania, calling for a huge police presence when they played one another. The Capitals went bankrupt in 2004 and since then Berlin has been a one-team city for the first time since the Wall went up (the Capitals, formerly called the Prussian Devils, were the West Berlin side). The German Ice Hockey League (Deutsche Eishockey-Liga, www.del.org) was formed in 1994, a commercially successful local spin-off from the German Ice Hockey Federation (Deutsche Eishockey-Bund, www.deb-online.de). A good English-language resource for fans is www.germanhockey.net, which is updated daily with news and scores. The German national team is ranked 10th in the world, and has already qualified for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
