Divorce

If your marriage falls apart while in Berlin, German law will allow you to end it. The only unknown is whether or not your native country will recognise the divorce decree; your embassy will have the answer. With that cleared up, you’ll need to have lived separately for a year if both parties agree to the divorce, or three years if someone is contesting the move. You and your soon-to-be-ex must live in Germany at the start of the proceedings and you’ll both be required to retain a lawyer. During the proceedings, the court will review the relationship to determine if anyone is due compensation or child support to maintain the same quality of life for everyone once the divorce is complete. The court will even make sure that the pensions of both parties grew at the same pace during the relationship. Like anywhere, custody battles are a routine component of German divorce – talk to your lawyer.
