It may seem odd that you have to pay a set amount for water and heat each month before ever demonstrating how much water and heat you use. However, after your first calendar year in the apartment, your actual water, hot water and heat usage will be calculated. You’ll then be sent either a bill or a refund and your monthly payment of Betriebskosten (also known as Nebenkosten) will be adjusted accordingly. You pay the water and heat to your landlord as part of your monthly rent. On top of the Warmmiete, you’ll have to pay for your own electricity, gas, satellite television and telephone. Just call the relevant provider before or shortly after you moved in, tell them the date of your move and you’re done.
