DVD & Video Rental

With the rising cost of night time entertainment, many Dubliners have embraced the concept of a quiet night in. DVD rentals flourish across the city, though few video rentals can still be found. Most DVD rentals are offered by chains such as Xtra-vision (www.xtravision.ie) and Chartbusters (www.chartbusters.ie), though Laser (01 671 1466, 23 South Great George’s Street, Dublin 2) is an independent film rental outlet with a huge following. Most of these stores rent new releases for approximately €5 for one night, with a late charge being the same. Older films are often rented for around €3 and sometimes for two or three nights at a time. In order to become a member of a DVD rental store, proof of address and identity are usually required so make sure that you have a household bill handy. Several online DVD rental companies have popped up lately including Screen Click (www.screenclick.com), Moviestar (www.moviestar.ie) and Busy Bee (https://busybeedvd.rentshark.com) which generally offer a monthly subscription fee for receiving DVDs through the post. Return postage is usually free, though since a credit card or debit card (sometimes called a laser card) is kept on file you’ll want to read the contract carefully to be sure that you know what will be charged to your account – and how often. Public libraries have also begun to offer DVDs, usually for free and for a borrowing period of one week, but this privilege is only extended to members with a valid library card.
