Electricity & Water
Like most utilities in Dublin, the government still has involvement in both the electricity and water supplies to the city. The Dublin City Council regulates water supplies, and the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) is still 95% government owned. However, this can’t be viewed negatively because there are surprisingly few disruptions to either. Tap water is free for Dublin city residents (though rumours are rife that this can’t continue for much longer), and electricity is often included in the price of smaller rentals such as flats or bedsits. For those who must pay for electricity on top of their rent or mortgage, try to rent somewhere with gas fired water heaters or your bills will skyrocket. ESB’s NightSaver plan cuts the cost of electricity in half from 23:00 to 08:00 in winter, and from 24:00 to 09:00 in summer, although standing charges will increase.
