Independently run private schools are not obligated to admit special needs students, but if they have the necessary resources, some will work to accommodate students with learning or developmental disabilities. Some parents opt to teach children with special needs at home, which they are legally permitted to do, assuming they can demonstrate compliance with New York State educational standards.
