Cash is the preferred method of payment in Oman, although credit cards are accepted in larger department stores, restaurants and hotels. Cash and traveller’s cheques can be exchanged in licensed exchange offices, banks and international hotels – as usual a passport is required for exchanging traveller’s cheques. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, take traveller’s cheques in US dollars if possible. Local cheques are generally accepted in business but not for personal purchases. If you are taking a lease for accommodation, it is likely that you will need to pay by cheque and supply post-dated cheques for the remaining period of the rent. There are no restrictions on the import or export of any currency. Israeli currency is prohibited.
