Expats and tourists are not entitled to use government hospitals but must instead register with one of the private hospitals or clinics, with the exception of expats requiring emergency treatment that is not available in private hospitals. If you are an expat and you do require treatment at a government hospital or clinic, you will be charged for their services. Muscat Private Hospital and KIMS Oman Hospital are clean and well-staffed with English speaking professionals. Most people who receive medical treatment in Oman can say their experience was a positive one. However, private medical care is costly, and visitors and non-residents are strongly advised to take out medical insurance.
Your employer may provide health insurance for you but it may be less than fully comprehensive. It is vital that you arrange insurance for yourself and your family as treatment here can be very costly. Dental and maternity cover are usually optional extras and not provided as standard.
