Pudong International Airport

Thirty kilometres to the south-east of the city centre, Pudong International Airport handles the majority of Shanghai’s international flights. Queues for customs and immigration can be painfully long, especially if you are arriving into Pudong after lunchtime, so plan accordingly. Also worth noting is the tendency for some airlines, such as Emirates and Qantas, to weigh hand luggage on departure and to reject anything over the limit – so it’s best to check restrictions before you pack. Huge plans to expand the airport began with the opening of Terminal 2 in March 2008. The new terminal is the second largest in China and is designed to handle 40 million passengers annually.

A cab ride from downtown takes about an hour and shouldn’t cost more than ¥160, or you can opt for the Maglev.
