Highlights

No longer the Baku of beyond, the cultural capital of Azerbaijan is rapidly changing and fast becoming a rather surprising party town. It’s close enough to pop over for a weekend, is scattered with affordable accommodation and is a journey into the unknown – if you like that kind of thing.

The next big thing
Alternately called the Paris of the East and the Next Dubai, the oil-rich Baku is well poised to become the Middle East’s next big luxury travel destination. Culturally, its main claim to fame is the well-preserved Old City, a maze of honey-coloured limestone streets dating back to the Arab conquest that’s full of mosques, caravanserais (traditional roadside inns) and madrasas (religious schools), surrounded by 13ft-thick walls.

Once the sun sets, its urban nightlife, array of ambient jazz clubs, and world-class ballet performances bring this modern, cosmopolitan hotspot into its own. Take a trip over to the capital between late May and early June, and you can soak up the sounds of the annual Jazz Festival – the open-air brass, bass and drum performances in Fountain Square are nothing if not unique.

Out of the city
A short distance away from the capital are mountainside villages, fascinating ruins, and rural communities that still live a traditional lifestyle – all of which are perfect for a day trip out of the city. From the beauty of the High Caucasus mountain range in the north to the lush tropical regions of the south, and back to the breakneck pace and exciting buzz of modern-day Baku, Azerbaijan offers a unique, culturally rich way of life.
