As countries go, Cyprus wins the prize for the smallest country with the biggest cultural heritage. This picture-perfect island, said to be the birthplace of the mythical Aphrodite, is all glittering golden sands, sparkling azure seas and archaeological ruins – and what’s more, it’s got a cracking climate too. The summers are perfect for catching up with some much-needed R&R on the beach, while the winters are mild enough for mountain walks and skiing on the slopes.  

Culture and coastlines
The charming coastal towns of Limassol, Paphos and Larnaca are dotted with many mosaics, temples and tombs – and charming tavernas too. The island is also home to the magnificent Troodos Mountains – a string of stunning peaks where majestic monasteries and quaint villages cling to the hillsides. It’s seriously breathtaking.There’s plenty of variety, from the neon-lit nightlife of Ayia Napa to the uncrowded beaches of Limassol. Explore nature trails through the pine forests of the Troodos Mountains, drive along rollercoaster-like paths, and discover mythology and archaeology in a land made colourful by thousands of citrus trees.

It’s a little under four hours from Dubai, and whether you put down roots in one of the many seafront hotels in Paphos or in Limassol, there are plenty of day trips right on your doorstep. In fact, you’re only ever a short stroll or drive away from stunning history, beautiful beaches, rugged mountains or vibrant nightlife. As befitting an island steeped in the mythology of the Greek gods, Cyprus is divine – even for those on mortal budgets.
