Textiles, Tailoring & Repairs

To buy fabric, head to Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre & Gold Centre, or the streets behind Marks & Spencer in Markaziyah, both of which have a high concentration of textile stores. You’ll find all kinds of fabric from the most delicate broderie anglaise to practical cottons. Compare prices between stores and don’t forget to haggle. Look out for sales – the prices are often too low to resist. If you don’t fancy pounding the streets, Al Esayi Textile in Abu Dhabi Mall stocks a range of printed and plain cottons and silks, and IKEA has a good range of bright, colourful cottons, plus curtain fabrics for kitting out your home.

There are numerous tailors in Abu Dhabi and most operate from small shops tucked away down side streets. The cost of fabric and workmanship is comparatively cheap, and having a shirt, suit, summer dress or even wedding dress custom-made can be a surprisingly affordable option.

Tailors can copy a pattern, a garment, or even a photograph, and any good service will include at least one fitting before the garment is finished. Standards of workmanship vary, so ask around to get recommendations of good tailors. In addition, different tailors specialise in different styles of garment, such as saris, abayas, western-style clothes, suits and wedding dresses, so while most tailors will tell you that they can stitch anything you need, you’re more likely to be happy with the results if you go to one that can demonstrate their experience in that style.

Agree on the price of the item before the tailor starts work. When the garment is finished, you will be able to try it on and have minor adjustments made if necessary. Personal recommendations are the best way to find a trusted tailor.
