Driving Licence
The legal age for driving in Malaysia is 17, although you won’t find too many Malaysian teenagers on the roads due to the expense of car ownership. Holders of overseas driving licences can drive legally in for up to three months using their regular licence or an International Driving Permit. You should definitely apply for an International Permit if your original licence is not in English. Once you have a work permit you can get a permanent Malaysian licence. Keep your licence with you while driving, as you can be asked to produce it by uniformed policemen during a spot check or at the scene of an accident. You will be fined if you fail to produce your licence when asked. Malaysia operates a system of demerit (penalty) points for driving offences, points last for a year and if you accumulate over 15 points in a year your licence will be suspended for six months. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is an offence and the blood alcohol limit for Malaysia is 0.08%. See Driving for more information.
