If you have an accident, it is important to call the police immediately. You must have your insurance card, registration and driving licence ready to show the officer once they arrive on the scene. Even if you, or the person who hits you, wants to settle the damages without your insurance companies, having a police report will ensure that you are paid. Be sure to always call your insurance company directly after the accident occurs again, even if not pursuing claims through the agency. This will ensure that the other party cannot counter sue you for unwarranted damages. The police report will not include the other driver’s phone number – you must obtain that information on your own before leaving the scene.
