Traffic Accidents
If you have an accident, it is important to call the police immediately. You must have your insurance card, registration and driving licence ready to show the officer once they arrive on the scene. Even if you, or the person who hits you, wants to settle the damages without your insurance companies, having a police report will ensure that you are paid. Be sure to always call your insurance company directly after the accident occurs again, even if not pursuing claims through the agency. This will ensure that the other party cannot counter sue you for unwarranted damages. The police report will not include the other driver’s phone number – you must obtain that information on your own before leaving the scene. If you require a copy of the accident report for insurance reasons, you may call or visit the local police agency or precinct where the accident occurred. There may be a small charge for obtaining this. If possible, move off the road after your accident occurs. Accidents account for the majority of traffic in and around the city and your fellow motorists won’t take well to you blocking the middle lane.
