Stretching from Kaikoura in the north to the Ashley River in the south, and inland to Hanmer Springs, Hurunui district perches high in the main divide. It has enjoyed a spectacular revival of fortunes on the backs of tourism and viticulture. Waipara boasts more than 20 wineries – its distinctive pinot noir, riesling, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc vintages command respect. Take a wine tour from Christchurch or Kaikoura, see the vineyards aboard a horse-drawn cart drawn (03 314 9001) or get a handle on the terroir at the Waipara Hills Winery Restaurant (03 314 6900). There are good local beaches, notably Gore Bay, which has a good campsite (03 319 8010).
