Finding A Home

If you drive around Muscat, you’ll see a good number of ‘To Let’ boards hanging up outside available properties, so, if you already have a preferred area in mind, this is a good way to look for a house. By doing this, you may also be able to rent directly from the landlord and therefore avoid paying agents’ commission. However, a reliable estate agent can save you a lot of time and effort by arranging viewings of several suitable properties.

Look out also for properties nearing completion. Although they may not have a sign outside, try and find the watchman who will give you the landlord’s number. You can also browse the classified ads in the local newspapers, or keep an eye on supermarket noticeboards.

If you do choose to use an agent, you have the choice of local agencies or the bigger, internationally recognised names. Many people can organise an estate agent through their company PRO, but it is always wise to check that the recommended agent is a registered real estate broker, authorised to conduct leasing in Muscat.

Reputable agencies will not only show you a selection of suitable properties, but they will also assist you with the paperwork and ensure that the required municipality procedures are followed. Landlords should pay the agent’s commission and you should bear no cost or ‘finder’s fee’.
