Female Visitors

In general, women should not feel especially unsafe in Paris. A woman walking alone is not at all uncommon. If taking the metro late at night, it is advisable to sit in the first train car; the driver is just on the other side of the window in the front and can intervene or call for further assistance in a case of harassment. Long metro transfer corridors such as Châtelet – Les Halles and Montparnasse should not be traversed alone at night. Les Halles, in the first arrondissment, is notoriously unsafe at night and should be avoided by men and women alike. If bothered by someone, the best strategy is to ignore the person and walk away.
