Drinks
Drinking alcohol is closely intertwined with socialising and meals so nearly every block has a cafe, corner store or supermarket where wine, beer and often liquor are available. France’s legal drinking age is 16, although younger children drink wine with their family dinner. In restaurants a bottle of wine begins around €17 while an individual glass or a draft beer, un pression, is at least €5. Mixed drinks are pricier with a €10 minimum depending on the venue. Cocktail bars are a staple of the party scene, ranging from the legendary Harry’s Bar to the ephemeral cool of the Hotel Costes . France is an oenophile’s paradise; Willi’s Wine Bar and the tasting room inside the Lavinia wine shop are notable for their vast selections. Restaurants serve Coca Cola for about €3.50 and a popular juice option is un citron ou orange pressé, freshly squeezed lemon or orange juice served with sugar and a pitcher of water to mix to taste.
