Tipping
While it isn’t obligatory to tip in Singapore, it is an acceptable practice and definitely welcomed by recipients. It is left entirely to your discretion, as in any industry it’s unacceptable to ask for a tip. While not required to tip taxi drivers, tour guides and hotel staff, it’s customary (though not compulsory) to tip car park valets and porters a dollar or so. At food and beverage outlets, a 10% service charge in place of tips is automatically included in the bill. Ask to take it off the bill if the service was horrendous. How this gets distributed to the staff, if at all, differs widely among companies. A fairly common practice is for the company to distribute 50% of the service charge among the service staff and keep the rest. The tip on your credit card slip goes to the company first and is pooled together with the service charge. Tips do not go to specific waiters. If you wish to thank a particular waiter, give them cash and let them know the tip is personally for them.
