Japan has over 700 universities, although not many of these offer courses in English. Look out for the international universities with branches in Japan, such as McGill University and Temple University. Tokyo International University offers an English language masters in its Graduate School of Economics. Many Japanese universities also have international exchange programmes with recognised universities abroad.

There are five types of tertiary institution that foreign students can enrol in. These consist of universities, graduate schools, junior colleges, special training colleges (post-secondary courses) and institutes of technology.
