Safety

As is the case when hiking anywhere in the world, embarking on a local trek is not an activity that should be undertaken lightly, no matter how short or easy you think the route will be, or how experienced a hiker you consider yourself to be.

Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back and don’t forget to take a map, compass, GPS equipment and robust hiking boots.

Do not ever underestimate the strength of the sun here, no matter what time of year it is – take sunscreen, and most importantly, loads of water (a CamelBak rucksack is ideal). For most people, the cooler and less humid winter months are the best season for serious mountain hiking. Be particularly careful in wadis (dry riverbeds) during the wet season as flash floods can immerse a wadi in seconds.

Also note that there are no mountain rescue services in the UAE, so anyone venturing out into the mountains should be reasonably experienced or accompanied by someone who knows the area. Don’t forget to fully charge your phone and take it with you.
