Who is Kwakoe?

The name Kwakoe comes from former Dutch colony Suriname – a former slave drop during the Golden Age where the African tradition was to name males after the day on which they were born. When slavery was abolished on 1 July 1863, a statue of a freed slave was erected in commemoration. And since 1 July 1863 was a Wednesday, the statue was named Kwakoe.

All the unsold junk left on the street after Queen's Day does actually belong to the Queen, according to Dutch law, until the rubbish teams collect it.

Miracle of Amsterdam

In 1345 a dying man in a house on the Kalverstraat vomited up the host after his last communion. As was custom, what he had brought up was thrown on the fire but the next morning the wafer was discovered undamaged. It developed healing powers, and on two occasions, miraculously made its own way back to the man's house on the Kalverstraat.
