Money

Paying with a bank debit card and pin number is almost more popular than paying with cash in Amsterdam. Most machines just take Dutch bank cards. Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club) are widely acceptable in hotels and restaurants but not in supermarkets, bars or cafes. There's a pre-pay function on most (Dutch) debit cards where you can 'load' the card from a 'Chipknip' terminal then use the card as cash. Bills are generally paid by bank transfer either by using the yellow 'acceptgiro' attached to most bills or when paying online. Internet banking is very widely used.
