Population

The Netherlands is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with 42% of citizens concentrated in urban areas, particularly the four cities of the Randstad – Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Den Haag (The Hague) and Utrecht. The population reached 16,357,992 at the end of the first quarter of 2007, and is increasing by 80 people a day. The immigration ‘waves’ from former colonial territories, guest workers and asylum seekers have led to an increasingly multicultural society and this is particularly so in Amsterdam, which boasts 176 nationalities. The population of Amsterdam is 743,027 – 376,913 female and 366,114 male. 382,746 are 'native Dutch'; 255,169 are 'non-western foreigners' (niet-westerse allochtonen); and 105,112 are 'western foreigners'. Nationally, there are 3,170,406 'persons with a foreign background' who have at least one parent born abroad. The average household size nationally is 2.6 people. In Amsterdam, 54.6% households are inhabited by single people. Life expectancy at birth is 76.5 for men and 81.8 for women.
