The police will only become involved at the request of the coroner. The police may take procession of the body and request an autopsy but the family has the right to refuse. The family may also request an autopsy through the doctor if they choose to. If an autopsy is required then the death certificate cannot be applied for until the autopsy is finished and the body released to the funeral home with the completed forms. Depending on the circumstances this can take days or longer.
