Exchanging Your Licence

If you are able to exchange your licence then you will have to go to your local municipal office and request and pay for a print out stating who you are and where you live (uittreksel bevolkingsregister) as well as a declaration of health form (eigen verklaring) and a form for the licence exchange. You then fill out the forms and send them with the uittreksel bevolkingsregister to the Centraal Bureau Rijvaardigheid (Central Road Aptitude Bureau). When they have processed your request, and if it’s accepted, they will send you a ‘certificate of fitness’ or verklaring van geschiktheid (you won’t need this if you are from an EU or EEA country and are exchanging your licence within a year of arriving). You will then have to take this and the following documents back to your municipal office: your original driving licence, two identical passport photos, and the licence exchange request form (completed by you and the municipal office employee). Once your application has been processed and accepted you will receive your Dutch licence in the mail. This usually takes about two to three weeks and you cannot drive during this time.
