Dentists & Orthodontists

Selecting a dentist in the Netherlands is similar to finding a doctor. You do not need a referral to make an appointment with a dentist. You can find a dentist in your area by either calling ACCESS (423 32 17) for a list, checking the Gouden Gids (Yellow Pages) under Tandartsen (Dentists) or by checking the website www.tandarts.nl and entering your city and postcode. To see an orthodontist you will need to ask your dentist for a recommendation and a referral letter. If you need emergency treatment you can call your dentist outside office hours and there will be a recording with the telephone number of an on-call dentist in your area. Otherwise, you can call the 24-hour emergency dental service on 686 11 09. Dentistry prices are quite high in the Netherlands, so it’s best to check what type of supplementary insurance cover you will need to help pay for the majority of dental costs. Also, before having any major dental work done, you should check your insurance policy. Cosmetic dentistry is becoming widespread and many dentists now offer teeth whitening and cosmetic services in their practices.
