Main Government Hospitals

Amsterdam has a broad range of hospitals (ziekenhuizen); most are non-profit institutions and two are university hospitals. If you or a family member require hospitalisation in a non-emergency situation, your family doctor will make the admission arrangements. The hospital will contact you with your admission date and you must notify your insurance company. The hospital administration will take insurance information and issue a hospital identity card (ponskaartje). This card will be used throughout your stay and subsequent follow-up visits to record the treatments received and the related costs incurred. During your stay you will probably be sharing a room with one to three other patients, but it’s not uncommon for up to six people to share a room. You can request a private room if one is available. Hospitals do vary in the type of specialised care they provide and your family doctor will be able to decide which hospital is best for the treatment you require.
