Those wishing to donate will not need a card. With more than 30 donated organs per million inhabitants, Spain has one of the most successful organ donation records in the world. This is partly down to the so-called ‘Spanish model’, the central monitoring of near-death cases in intensive care, but also because of its ‘opt out’ system of donation, whereby those who do NOT wish to donate register with a national database.
