Not all hospitals that treat patients on social security are under direct local government control. Some, like Hospital de San Joan de Deu, are private institutions subsidised by the state through a grant known as a concertada (concertat in Catalan). Concertada hospitals are part of the network of public hospitals in Catalonia, known as the XHUP.
