Bank Accounts

Local banks dominate in China, though a few western institutions, such as HSBC and Citibank, have set up branches recently. Opening a bank account in the local currency is pretty simple. You’ll need to show a passport with a valid visa and some proof of address (a lease or utility bills normally work). Banks provide debit cards and ATMs are plentiful. Not all ATMs take foreign debit cards, though Bank of China machines are usually reliable. Should you need to visit the bank, allow plenty of time as the queues can be long and slow moving. If you’re going at lunch time, it’s often best to grab a queue ticket then have your meal. By the time you’ve finished, it should be your turn. Banks are generally open from 09:00 to 17:00, though some close early on weekends. Local banks can also provide MasterCard or Visa credit cards.
