Nothing demonstrates Beijing’s development more than its booming construction industry. Most expats choose to rent, as laws regulating foreign ownership are complex and make it hard to guarantee a secure investment. The options for leasing range from very cheap flats in concrete tower blocks to lavish penthouse apartments.

Residential areas tend to suit quite specific needs, so it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the different districts before you decide where to put down your roots.
