Hairdressers
Haidressers (Friseurs) are not hard to find in Berlin. Most small, local shops charge €10 per haircut, occasionally less for men. The procedure in these places is to take a ticket from the machine and wait until your number is called or it appears on a screen. High-end or boutique hair salons are somewhat of a rarity in Berlin, except perhaps along Ku’damm.
The city does not have a culture of spending much money on hair, and many of the dye jobs, especially on younger women, are done at their bathroom sinks. Even more modest hair salons, however, tend to carry international luxury hair products from companies such as Biolage and Matrix (www.matrixbeautiful.com). See Perfumes and Cosmetics.
Fringes have become ubiquitous in Berlin, so it is worth specifying if you don’t want them. If you do have a fringe, it is possible to get a trim without cutting the rest of your hair, usually for about €5. Something that expats sometimes find surprising is that in cheap hair salons customers are expected to blow dry their own hair after it has been cut, although the hairdresser will style it at additional cost if desired. A blow dry usually comes free with more expensive haircuts, but ask the hairdresser to be sure. Most salons are unisex and child-friendly.
