Tai Chi

Tai chi is a martial art that originated in China more than 2,000 years ago. It combines gentle movements with controlled breathing and meditation. Its health benefits are thought to be cardiovascular, as well as emotional. It’s also though to enhance digestion and ease constipation.

It is particularly popular among older adults as it helps to keep the body supple and encourages circulation. At its core, tai chi is also a subtle method of self defence, but in its slowed down mode it’s a peaceful, social way to gently exercise. It does not require any special equipment or large space in which to work so it is practised in gyms, special studios, at home, and often outdoors. In summer, it is not unusual to see individuals or groups practising tai chi in the Tiergarten or Berlin’s other parks.
