Mobile Phones

It’s not uncommon to see New Zealanders with two or more mobile phones. This is usually because they’re taking advantage of the specials offered by the two competing mobile network operators, Telecom and Vodafone. Both companies offer a range of pay monthly and pay-as-you-go options.

It’s hard to separate the two companies in terms of the quality of service they offer; in some parts of the country the Vodafone network signal is stronger than that of Telecom’s, but in other parts the roles are reversed.

Signing up to either network is relatively simple – you will have to fill out a couple of forms and produce proof of ID, but that’s about all. Telecom runs a special call centre for new customers from overseas wanting to organise mobile phones. Call +64 3 374 0253 between 07:00 and 21:00 any day of the week. Vodafone also has a helpline (+64 9 355 2007 from overseas, 0800 800 021 from within New Zealand).
