Devonport
ust 15 minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland, the charming seaside suburb of Devonport is an excellent daytrip if your idea of a good time includes exploring eclectic second-hand bookshops, poking around arts and craft galleries, and having to choose between fish and chips on the beach or lunch in a cosy cafe. Devonport was one of the first areas to be settled in Auckland, and Victorian and Edwardian heritage buildings still line its main street, Victoria Road. On summer weekends the streets and beaches are busy with tourists and locals, but most head back to the CBD on an afternoon ferry. It’s definitely worth missing the ferry if your idea of a good time also includes a few drinks in friendly pubs, and watching the lights of downtown Auckland from a quaint Devonport bed and breakfast.
