Computers

From PCs at FNAC to iBooks at the city’s dedicated Macintosh stores, finding the latest in computer technology is not a difficult task. But finding a great bargain? Now that’s another matter entirely. Though by no means substantially more expensive than computer technology in the US or UK, the low costs of Singapore and Hong Kong are not to be found within Paris’ many computer stores.

Chain stores FNAC and Darty stock a fairly wide range of both PCs and Macs at decent prices, however service in both instances leaves something to be desired. Staff shortages and busy stores means those seeking knowledgeable advice may be in for a long wait. PCs can also be found at Carrefour stores.

When it comes to repairs, be prepared for a decent wait: computers bought at generalist electronic stores will need to be returned to the maker for assessment and repair, resulting in delays that can stretch as long as eight weeks. And be attentive with guarantees; standard warranties usually run no longer than 12 months with an option to purchase more time at extra cost. Consider this a wise investment, as the costs of repair outside warranty can be prohibitive – like DVD players and music systems, repairs often cost nearly as much as the original purchase price. Guarantees will not cross international borders in most instances, so if you plan on taking your new computer out of the country prepare to send it back to France should anything go awry.
