There’s a host of qualified instructors and driving schools to choose from, and the scope of training ranges from comprehensive programmes to customised outings with a group of friends. 
If you’re new to dune bashing, there are a number of companies and organisations that run beginners’ courses. Try Desert Rangers, Off-Road Zone or contact Emirates Driving Institute for details about their one-day training programmes, which give you safety skills as well as a desert driving certificate. 

Learn in convoy
Meanwhile, Sand Trax (04 289 5202) is a self-drive experience, where an instructor leads a convoy of 4WDs along a natural trail set among dramatic dunes. Following each other in a pre-arranged order, you’ll be able to weave in and out of small dunes, along windblown trails and across sweeping sands. The fully automatic 4WDs are easy and safe to drive, and make for an unforgettable desert safari experience.
