Safety

Off-road driving is fun, but safety should be your top priority. Always be sensible and patient, and follow these guidelines:

Take your mobile phone: Even if network services are poor in some remote areas, in an emergency someone can try to reach a high point to get a signal. Make sure your phone is fully charged, and for longer trips take your charger – don’t let it be the battery that lets you down.
Travel with a buddy: If you are going more than a kilometre or two off the beaten track, and always for desert driving, go with an experienced off-road driver. That second vehicle or extra pair of hands could literally be a lifesaver. You are never too experienced to take a second vehicle.
Pack a first-aid kit: Fortunately the UAE has very few nasty plants and animals, but you need to be prepared if they do come into contact with humans. Know the medical histories of your passengers or companions – if they are on medication or have any chronic conditions, make sure that they are fully equipped and fit to go before you leave.
Always take plenty of water; at least three litres of drinking water per person per day.
Wear your seatbelt: It might not be comfortable while bumping over dunes, but the benefits far outweigh the inconvenience. ALWAYS wear your seatbelt, and ensure that all your passengers, both front and back seat, do the same.
Spread the word: Even though you might not be getting that far away from ‘civilisation’, try to let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back. If nothing else, in the event of a mishap it may be comforting to know that there is someone who will raise the alarm if you don’t return.
