Working Holiday Scheme

You are only eligible for a working holiday visa if you are between the ages of 18 and 30 and are a citizen of Australia, Canada or New Zealand. If you are eligible for this visa then you will be able to live and work in the Netherlands for a period of 12 months. You can download the application form from the website of your local Dutch embassy. You will need to apply for your visa at least two weeks before your departure date. In your application you will have to include your passport, proof of medical insurance (the Netherlands has a deal with Medicare in Australia, check their website to find out details), a copy of your return air ticket, proof that you have at least €1900, (€3,800 if you do not have a return ticket), a copy of your passport signed by a Justice of the Peace who has confirmed your identity in your presence, a copy of another piece of photographic ID, two passport photos and a self -addressed envelope. You should also obtain an accredited birth certificate before you leave, as you will have to present this to the IND with your residence application. You will have 90 days to enter the Netherlands from the date of issue of the visa; if you need more time you will have to apply for your visa at the closest Dutch embassy to you while you are travelling. Check here for a full list of Dutch embassies: www.minbuza.nl. Once you arrive in Amsterdam you will have to register with the foreign police within three days. You will then have to apply for your residence permit at the town hall; they will charge you €30 and send your application to the IND for final approval. You will be given a sticker in your passport that will enable you to apply for a tax number at the tax office. You should do this as soon as possible. You will then need to return to the town hall for a temporary residence visa which will allow you to work legally while you await the permanent one from the IND, which can take months.
