Internet

Amsterdam is well and truly online. You can choose between having an internet connection through your phone line (ADSL) or via cable. Being online is very affordable. A high speed broadband connection will set you back no more then €50 a month. There are also a lot of internet cafes in the centre of town. Some have a few computers and charge nothing for internet use at all, others charge one or two euros for half an hour. Most people have computers at home or in the office, so internet cafes and libraries are mostly used by students or backpackers. More and more regular cafes have a wireless facility so people can work on their own laptops. When choosing your internet connection you’ll have a large variety to pick from, not only which provider but which package. There’s little difference in what each provider can offer these days – most include TV, phone and internet, so you should check them all and see which one suits you best; it may come down to which has the best TV programmes. You also don’t need to have the same provider for everything. You may only want TV from one and phone and internet from another. If you choose an ADSL connection you’ll be paying €25 a month to KPN plus the costs of the internet deal from your chosen provider, which can be anything from €16 to €50 a month. If you choose to have a cable connection you’ll be paying for your usual TV costs plus the internet, which is about €15 to €60 depending on which speed of connection you need. An average connection speed is 1.5Mbps download and 256Kbps upload, and this will cost around €20 a month. With every provider you’ll get an email account that will end in the name of the provider; you can choose how it begins. If you’d like to have a website you can request one from your provider for a small monthly fee.
