Television
The standard television channels in Amsterdam offer a broad spectrum of shows in English and other languages. BBC1, 2, World and CNN are included in the standard package from UPC, the main provider. Television is via cable only and the standard package costs you €16.05 a month. The Dutch use subtitles in place of dubbing and pick up most of the top shows from the UK and US which means you’ll most likely see your favourite shows. Dutch channels include Veronica, Net5, SBS6 and the government-owned Ned1, 2 and 3, and RTL 4, 5 and 7. You'll find shows in English screened across all of them, though there are more on some than others. Censorship laws are not as strict as elsewhere but you won’t see any extreme violence or nudity on television before 20:30. Digital television has arrived in the Netherlands and is fairly cheap. The number of channels available and the quality of the sound and image are said to be superior to that of normal television. The main provider is UPC, www.upc.nl; packages range from €3 to €45 a month. Other providers who rent cable space from UPC include www.tele2.nl and www.planet.nl.
