Postal Services

TPG Post recently changed its name to TNT Post for competitive marketing reasons and to make it easier for its international network. The company has been private for nearly a decade. There are post offices all over the city and you can buy stamps from them as well as from newsagents and supermarkets. On the whole it’s a fairly reliable system though post is delivered quite late in the day. Businesses can expect to get an early delivery in the morning and a later one in the afternoon but private addresses should not expect to see post until early afternoon. Post is delivered to your door unless it requires a signature, or is too large to fit through the mail slot, in which case if you’re not home you’ll receive a slip letting you know they’ll come again on the next business day. If you’re not there again the delivery person will leave a slip letting you know which post office to pick up your mail from; remember to take ID and the slip from the delivery person with you to claim your mail. Mail within the country is very fast, often arriving the next business day. It’s also quite fast within the EU, but for countries further afield things can take a bit longer – from two to six weeks for Australia and the US. To ensure a speedy delivery you should request registered post, that way you can insure and track your mail. For packages of up 2kg you’ll pay €12.45 for most European delivery places and for Australia and the US it will cost €22.45 and still take weeks. If you need a package to arrive quickly you’re better off using a courier service or finding a gift online.
