Postnatal Care

There is no system in Spain for home visits by midwives or healthcare workers. Paediatricians will examine your baby in hospital with the first appointment usually two weeks after birth. You will then normally see your gynaecologist 40 days after birth. Breastfeeding mothers are still a minority in Spain, though huge efforts are being made by health authorities to promote natural feeding, and your GP should offer advice. Alba (www.albalactanciamaterna.org, 93 311 82 80) is a free, independent Barcelona-based support service for breastfeeding mothers. Barcelonins are not prudish about breastfeeding in public.
