Special Needs Education
Many schools in Beijing can accommodate students with mild special needs. Most schools offer language support for students in several languages including English and Chinese. Australian International School of Beijing, Children’s Learning Center of Beijing and Daystar Academy are among the schools offering English as a Second Language (ESL). Daystar Academy offers Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) while Lycée Français International de Pékin has French as a second language.
Many international schools, like Beijing BISS International School with its Optimal Learning Centre, and Beijing City International School which has a learning support teacher, can assist students with mild to moderate learning difficulties, like Attention Deficit Disorder and dyslexia. Several nurseries and kindergartens like Children’s Learning Center of Beijing will accept students with mild speech problems. Many schools are open to accepting students with disabilities, provided the school is equipped to meet their requirements.
For students with more severe disabilities like autism, admission is determined after consultation of medical records and in-person interviews to access the student’s needs. While most schools are willing to consider students with special needs, children with severe needs are often turned away. Only one school, Sunshine Learning Centre (below), is solely devoted to educating children with special needs.
The Parent Support Group (139 1029 7173) allows parents of children with special needs to share experiences and knowledge. The Selective Mutism Support Group (www.selectivemutismchina.gmxhome.de, or email selectivemutism.sgb@gmx.net) is a support group for families with children who have an anxiety disorder in which children have difficulty interacting in social situations including smiling, making eye contact and speaking.
