Courtyard Houses & Hutongs

While a great deal of Beijing’s traditional hutong or courtyard houses have been destroyed, it is still possible to find one to rent. Courtyards that have not been renovated tend to be very basic, with just one or two rooms on a single floor. Some do not even have their own bathroom, which means sharing communal toilets and washing out of a bucket. These start at about ¥5,000 a month. Those that have been renovated tend to be of a very high standard. Restored furniture and antique fittings give them a delightful traditional feel but mean rents tend to be over ¥20,000 a month.
